Roundtable on Financing Gender Equality & Women's Empowerment

Friday, September 19 from 9:00AM-5:00PM (EDT)

Washington, D.C.

Moderated by: Mayra Buvinic, Senior Fellow, United Nations Foundation

This strategy session will bring together opinion leaders and representatives from government, private sector, civil society, academia, and media and technology to engage in a joint conversation about how to catalyse more and innovative investments in gender equality and women’s rights.

As momentum builds for a post-2015 framework that has gender equality and women’s rights at its heart, this roundtable is a timely initiative to discuss how to ensure that global commitments to gender equality are funded smartly, coherently and systematically by the entire global community. In anticipation of the challenges and opportunities ahead, this roundtable will explore:

  • Emerging trends and actors in financing for gender equality and women’s rights;
  • The critical role of national governments in financing for gender equality;
  • Partnerships with the private sector;
  • Innovative financing models and mechanisms, including the use of new media and technologies;
  • Funding for women’s organisations and networks.

The roundtable will bring together a diverse mix of participants from the public sector, private sector and civil society, who for the first time will be invited to jointly discuss solutions for financing gender equality. Acting hosts include:

  • Patti O’Neill, Head of the Global Partnerships and Policies Division, Development Co-operation Directorate at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development;
  • John Hendra, Deputy Executive Director at UN Women;
  • Alyse Nelson, President and CEO of Vital Voices Global Partnership.
