Internship description:


Vital Voices seeks spring, summer, and fall interns to support the work of the Economic Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Department, which manages the VV GROW Fellowship, a highly competitive one-year accelerator program for women owners of small- and medium-sized businesses. The program includes customized business skills training, technical assistance, leadership development, and access to networks to grow their businesses and increase their leadership impact. Through global and regional online and in-person interventions, fellows focus on strategy and long-term business value paired with action-oriented plans. They amplify their role as leaders in their businesses and their communities to ultimately create jobs, stimulate long-term economic growth and produce wider social benefits. We seek Economic Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Interns for spring, summer, and fall:

  • Spring internship – January to May
  • Summer internship – May to August
  • Fall internship – September to December


The internship requires a commitment of minimum of 24 hours per week. The position is based in Washington, D.C. and is unpaid, though Vital Voices complies with university requirements for internship credit.


Interns will have the opportunity to learn about program development and pressing global women’s issues. Interns are an integral part of the team and will be able to perform substantive work. Economic Empowerment Program Staff will work with interns to develop their professional skills and knowledge.


Interns’ responsibilities will include one or more of the following areas, depending on interest, expertise, and program needs:


Admin: Support the creation of and updating of program and project management tools including guidelines and processes, trackers, best practices and tool kits


Communications: Support the execution of marketing and communications strategy, including writing blogs, articles, and success stories; managing social media platforms; developing promotional materials for programs; and graphic design


Development and Partnerships: Support the execution of partnerships and development strategy, including conducting research on potential donors, strategic partners and pro-bono service providers


Event Coordination: Support planning and coordination of three regional gatherings, in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean, as part of the VV GROW Fellowship, including conducting research on travel service providers, maintaining and updating trip budgets based on anticipated expenses, monitoring in-country news to inform security evaluations, prepare materials for in-country travel, and meticulously and accurately complete necessary paperwork


Monitoring and Evaluation: Support the execution of monitoring and evaluation activities including survey implementation and monitoring; assisting with quantitative data management, cleaning, and quality control; assisting with qualitative data analysis, including categorizing and coding; and drafting results reports for internal and external dissemination


Research: Gathering, compiling, and writing reports, summaries and other supporting materials for Economic Empowerment and Entrepreneurship programs; monitoring current events, researching issues and trends related to women’s entrepreneurship, contribute to weekly internal newsletter

  • Strong research and analytical skills       
  • Basic computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong interpersonal skills


Other Desired Characteristics:

  • Fluency in Arabic, French, Portuguese, and/or Spanish
  • Specific knowledge of one or more of the following regions: Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, and/or Sub-Saharan Africa
